Where to stay, what to see and how to balance beach days with culture on your first trip to Zanzibar.

Why Zanzibar

Zanzibar combines powder-white beaches and warm Indian Ocean water with centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian history. It is an easy flight from Nairobi, which makes it a natural pairing with a safari.

Where to stay

  • Nungwi and Kendwa (north): swimmable at all tides and famous sunsets.
  • Paje (east): wide beaches and kite-surfing; the tide goes far out.
  • Stone Town: one or two nights for history, food and architecture.

Don't miss

  1. A guided walk through Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  2. A spice farm tour to taste cloves, vanilla and cinnamon where they grow.
  3. A traditional dhow sunset cruise.
  4. Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll.

Good to know

The dry seasons from June to October and December to February are the most popular. Dress modestly away from the beach, especially in Stone Town.
