Donkeys instead of cars, carved Swahili doors and dhows at sunset — how to experience Kenya's most atmospheric island.

A living heritage town

Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili towns in East Africa. Its narrow lanes are best explored on foot — there are almost no cars on the island.

What to do

  • Wander the lanes and look out for intricately carved wooden doors.
  • Visit the Lamu Museum and the old fort.
  • Sail on a traditional dhow at sunset, often with a grilled-fish dinner on a sandbank.
  • Walk or take a boat to Shela for its long, quiet beach and dunes.

When to go

October to April has the calmest seas. The Lamu Cultural Festival, usually in November, celebrates dhow races, music and Swahili traditions.

Travel tips

  1. Dress modestly in town — shoulders and knees covered.
  2. Bring cash; card acceptance is limited.
  3. Slow down. Lamu rewards those who stay at least three nights.
In Lamu, time is measured by the call to prayer and the tide.
